The top of the tower records 1,029ft, the highest point in South East England. This picturesque walk offers memorable views of the chalk grasslands of Denbies Hillside and neighbouring Ranmore Common, and stops at a welcoming country pub stop en route. We started from Leith Hill Tower and followed the route clockwise. The walk mainly follows well worn paths and tracks and generally signposting and waymarking is good. Descending to Westhumble the route reaches the Stepping Stones Car Park and this is the start of the climb up Box Hill, after crossing the stepping stones across the river. border-radius: 2px;
The tower is open to the public at certain times for a small admission charge. Leith Hill and Box Hill, two of the Surrey Hills. In recent years, the views from around the base of the tower were somewhat blocked by the density of trees in the immediate vicinity, but now they quite amazing in almost every direction. The route is marked by signposts and waymarks bearing the walk symbol. This summit does not have a significant cairn and appears lower when viewed from the cairn don't be fooled!Return routes are either the same way, or conversely you could descend the screes and spur down the south side of the Depression. It's a lovely place to visit from April to June when it is full of pretty Rhododendrons. On the summit of Leith Hill is an 18th century Gothic tower, with panoramic views northwards to London and south to the English Channel. Coppicing is when the young stems of a tree are cut to ground level on a cycle, such as every 57 years. Set within an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and National Trust site, it makes a great setting for a hill climb. Leith Hill was also climbed three times during this years pro race Surrey Cycle Classic. Fortunately, we were doing this hill climb without 100 km of hard racing in our legs.
They are under threat from the robust Spanish bluebell which is more upright, paler blue and lacks scent. The views in every direction are stunning and theres even a small coffee shop in the tower. The walk continues around the north edge of Puttenham Common before coming into the village of Puttenham. A simple and very direct route to the summit is clearly marked on wooden posts up a track through the woods and if you do take this, the popular day trippers and hill baggers option, then you can simply retrace your steps back to the car park by following these waymarkers.
